The 9th Annual Young Comedians Special (1985)

YouTube contributor howvideo posted segments from HBO's 9th Annual Young Comedians Special, hosted by the late, great Rodney Dangerfield:

Comedians included Bob Saget, who earned a reputation as a square from his time on Full House and America's Funniest Home Videos, but as most of us know, has quite the sharp tongue...

Yakov Smirnoff, the famous Soviet expatriate who made a career out of being a fish out of water...

Maurice LaMarche, who I wouldn't have included except you may recognize him from various characters on Futurama, Pinky & The Brain, The Critic, Tiny Toon Adventures, The Real Ghostbusters, Inspector Gadget, etc...

and Louie Anderson (Life With Louie and Coming to America), who is unfairly criticized for his hosting duties on Family Feud, but who I thought did a good job and is actually better than current (5th) host John O'Hurley...

The rest of the acts can be found here.

You have to be kidding!! Louie Anderson was the worst host in the history of the Feud and possibly the worst host of anything on tv ever! O'Hurley is top notch and doing a great job! We love him! The ratings have gone up 44% since he's been hosting too.

Heh, I don't mind Yakoff in this video but the Canadian after him? YEESH. Why do people think impressions are funny? Sure, it's pretty cool to hear someone sound like someone else but it's never really funny.

Things were funnier in 1985.

Anonymous - I'm willing to leave O'Hurley vs Anderson as a matter of taste (I think O'Hurley is a fine actor but I don't particularly find him interesting as a host), but have the latest seasons really gone up 44% in the ratings? That seems ridiculously large, especially because I thought Richard Karn was a great, great host, my favorite since Richard Dawson. Plus, Karn was on 5 seasons, you'd think that if he wasn't drawing well, they would have cut him sooner.

Nathan - No, it's not funny, I can't believe that was his whole act. It was kind of funny hearing Yogi Bear swear, but he didn't run with it. I just posted it because he's a prolific voice actor, which is obviously what he's better suited towards.

Jai - What's funny about 1985 is having to describe Christopher Lloyd as the guy from Taxi and freakin' Commander Kruge from Star Trek III. Only a few more months and he could have said, "Hey, the guy from Back to the Future!"

That was, actually, the funniest part of LaMarche's act by far. Purely for reasons he didn't intend! It's good that he went on to be a voice actor with funny lines written for him.
